2022 Preston Dry Creek Valley Hartsock Estate Sauvignon Blanc

Located in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County—Preston is first and foremost a family farm. 

Besides wine, Preston produces an eclectic range of other items: estate-pressed olive oil, vegetables, nuts, bread, sunflowers, grains, bread, and livestock. 

Each one of these elements contributes a little bit of diversity to the ecosystem—an essential element in producing wines with layers, complexity, and soul. 

When you look at the estate built—you get the impression that the Prestons are just as much artists, naturalists, and thinkers as they are winemakers. 

Although Lou and Susan didn’t acquire the property until 1973, some of the red wine vines on the property date back to 1895. 

The wine on offer today is the estate's class-act Sauvignon Blanc.

This is textbook Dry Creek Valley—harvested from vines planted on an ancient creek bed. 

After a blitz of skin contact for texture and mouthfeel, the wine is fermented in stainless steel with just 15% going into mostly neutral French oak barrels which makes the finished wine just a little rounder around the edges. 

This is fermented spontaneously employing indigenous yeast. 

This is farming that is organic and certified. 

Great Sauvignon Blanc is a harmonious balance of micromanagement of pyrazines (crunchy green flavors) and maximization of minerality and clean citrus. 

This wine has it.

Approximately 1000 cases made annually.

My Notes Read: Virtually my ideal Sauvignon Blanc—this precious capture from Preston is marked by fresh cream, cured lemons, crushed seashells and subtle wafts of fresh linen, lemon grass, and a distinct, pedigreed minerality which seems to imply a Chavignol Sancerre inspiration. On the palate, there is a benevolent chassis of rich lemon curd, and more pillowy mineral that is caught-off-guard mouth filling yet lifted and fresh. And it weighs in at a cool, crisp 12.8%

Pour up with shellfish, lemon chicken, summer salads, eel and trout.

On Thursday May 16th, Natalie and Ryan, winemakers and owners of Outward Wines are going to be visiting The Annex for a comprehensive tasting seminar. 

Outward Wines is based in San Luis Obispo and celebrates special vineyard sites along the central coast. All of their sites are farmed using Organic and/or Biodynamic viticulture. 

These wines are super limited by virtue of the fact that in most cases just a few or a small handful of barrels are made.
