"As many of you know--Pinotage has made a name for itself as the South African flagship grape. In fact, this grape was effectively custom-tailored for the warmer regions of South Africa which were a little too warm for Pinot Noir. Pinotage is in fact a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault and offers some characteristics of each: the crisp cherry-driven earthiness of Pinot Noir and the rustic black-fruited grit of Cinsault. This rendition comes from the region of Darling (1 hour north of Cape Town) from bush vines planted in 1997. The focus here is on timing--to pick the Pinotage at the peak of ripeness before any overripe flavors develop and while the alcohol is still very modest (in this case, 12.23%). It is basket pressed and vinified in concrete eggs. The wine in the glass is an utter delight: comparatively light on its feet, brambly, and fresh. Partner it ideally with beef, lamb, and game--but also a great aperitif."
