"Tannat was brought to Uruguay by Basque settlers in the 1800s. It has since made a name for itself as the nation's signature grape variety--producing wines with earth, grit, and yes, tannin (for which the grape was named). This example from Pablo Fallabrino is pretty much a fastball. The fruit is sourced from the Atlantida region of Canelones on the South shore. On the nose an inviting perfume of wild flowers, cocoa, tree bark, and creamy blue fruit lures the taster in. On the palate, there is stunning concentration, texture and grit--serious tannin is laced with a plentitude of layers and the finish is long. In general, Tannat makes a great BBQ wine. Allow this wine some time to breathe to achieve the best outcome--decant or simply pour a glass out of the bottle which will let the air in and let rest for 30-40 minutes. Farmed sustainably. 1200 cases made."
