This is why I LOVE white Burgundy

Dear Readers,
 

Since the inception of this email program in September of 2014 this concept has loomed in the back of my mind. What if we could offer a true Meursault: a Meursault representative of the village and it's magnificent terroir. I mean really top-notch stuff, a benchmark example crafted by one of the village's top producers? And get it to you folks for under $60/bottle. Madness?

I thought so for a long time... I can't tell you how many false starts never came to fruition.

I've tasted a lot of Meursault. In some cases, there just wasn't enough wine to sell. And when there was enough wine to sell, the wine said "Meursault" on the label, but it didn't say "Meursault" when you poured it into the glass.

Meursault is a village in France producing White Burgundy. No doubt, one of the finest white wine villages in the world. It should have a certain typicity to it.  Star bright tree fruit and flinty gunsmoke, just replete with minerals.

Here it is, folks: 2013 Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault "Les Corbins"

Bitouzet Prieur is about as textbook and proper as Meursault gets. This family has been growing wine grapes for at least two centuries. And over the course of time they have accumulated a righteous patchwork of vineyards representing some of the best parcels of land across the villages of Meursault and Volnay.

This particular wine is sourced from a single vineyard. "Les Corbins", the Leiu Dit (French term: single vineyard parcel) sits in the North of the village and Bitouzet-Prieur owns a mere 1.5 Hectares. A mere two barrels (about 600 bottles) are reserved for the US market each year. And the wine is impeccable. A true reminder as to why I love White Burgundy. Truly world class.

My Notes Read: Hazelnut oil, fresh cream, beeswax, and musket flint on the nose. Although constantly evolving. This wine is a true pleasure just to smell and to look at. On the palate, crisp macoun, white citrus, more musket flint, mint, and smoke (as derived from the soil, not toasty oak!) all wrapped up in the perfect Meursault package. Crystalline structure. Mouthwatering minerality. All lovingly brushed with butter. Curiously long finish. Very impressive.
