Dear Readers--

2019 Preston Farm and Winery Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel (Sonoma County)

Located in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County—Preston is first and foremost a family farm.

Besides wine, Preston produces an eclectic range estate-pressed olive oil, vegetables, nuts, bread, sunflowers, grains, bread, and livestock.

Each one of these elements contributes a little bit of diversity to the ecosystem—an essential element in producing wines with layers, complexity, and soul.

When you look at the estate built—you get the impression that the Prestons are just as much artists, naturalists, and thinkers as they are winemakers.

Although Lou and Susan didn’t acquire the property until 1973, some of the Zinfandel vines on the property date back to 1895. Additional vines were added in 1910 and 1940, and these plantings anchor the wine on offer today.

Although the Prestons decide not to brand this wine as “Old Vine Zinfandel”, these are most definitely Old Vines in every sense.

As some of you know by now, I don’t normally subscribe to the archetype Cali Zin: jammy, high octane and saturated.

This is not your average Zin—marked by freshness, minerality, and food friendliness.

The grapes are certified organic. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeast.

The wine slept for 20 months in barrel—just 5-10% new barrels which leaves a thumbprint of French Oak that is just barely detectable.

The final blend is 94% Zinfandel and just a splash, of 6% Mataro--that’s the local moniker for the same grape that the French call Mouvedre. It contributes a little extra black fruit, earthiness, and herbs.

Drink now and over the course of the next 5-8+ years.

830 cases were produced.

Cheers.

My Notes Read: This is gorgeous. On the nose: baby wild strawberries, raspberry liqueur, crushed stone, and breakfast tea. On the palate: all freshness--more delicious bramble seamlessly integrates with soft tannins. Layer upon layer of generous fruit is delightfully counterpointed by considerable secondary complexity: spices, birch bark, dried leafy tea and dusty earth. This is 100% open and ready to drink as soon as you pull the cork. That said, it’s hard to imagine that it won’t get even better with a few years in the cellar. Drink now and over the next 5-8 years.

I love this. I bet you’re going to love this too. 14.5%
