For the second year running, we’re pleased to announce a single-barrel bottling from our buddy Tim Malone.

This custom production was bottled directly from the barrel exclusively for Ancona’s.

This series was born when Tim visited last spring—hauling with him a couple of barrel samples stowed away in his suitcase. When we tasted the barrels, we fell in love with a single barrel of Cancilla Vineyard Pommard and Tim bottled it for us right from the barrel—just 25 cases of stunning, crystalline, Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. That was Secret Barrel #1.

Although Tim wasn’t able to visit this year—he mailed us a trio of single barrel samples that he'ed pulled from casks sleeping in his cellar.

I have to say from the get-go that the sample set this year was simply outstanding. 2018 is a gorgeous vintage in the valley, and at this address in particular. We easily could have bottled either one of the three barrels Tim offered us.

After much deliberation, Kyle, Mitch, and I came to a consensus to use the barrel of Cancilla Block 11 Pommard (once again), born from a mostly neutral, used-since-2015 French oak barrel--to be topped up with just a splash of Lia’s Vineyard Dijon 115.

Cancilla Vineyard, farmed by Ken Cancilla, is in Willamette Valley, just outside of Gaston:

Ultimately, Tim added “a hose-full” of Lia’s Dijon 115 (actually, two hoses full, to be precise)….'it’s a 20 foot hose'….so 40 feet total…about 4 gallons according to Tim—but who’s counting?

Point is, the “Secret Barrel” this year is just a little bit different than last year…anchored in Cancilla Vineyard but offering touch of nuance Lias—which adds a dark-fruited, pretty, Cameron-esque kinda feel.

And then there is the factor of the vintage: 2018—which is a total stunner. As Tim describes it, the growing season was warm, long, and generally flawless. “We almost always get some rain around harvest time…but not in 2018…it was easy…almost boring (insert Tim Malone giggle here).”

And what you get folks, is one of the most thrilling Ancona’s Custom Bottlings to date.

It’s also Organic: Cancilla Vineyard, Certified Organic, and Lia’s Practicing Organic.

This is, without a doubt, a quintessential accompaniment for the bird, and the Thanksgiving meal as a whole.

Please note, there is just a single barrel—a small barrel this year—and I anticipate demand will be high.

Just 23 cases made, 6 magnums.

Orders will be filled first come, first served.

Stay safe out there.

My Notes ReadSecret Barrel II is simply archetype Willamette, its nose if rife with layers upon layers of dark cherries, ripe cranberries, and whispers of black tea, cola and Pinot spice—all the trappings of pure autumnal bliss.  On the palate, it’s stacked with well-rounded, almost luxurious fruit: pristine, ripe, and satisfying—and yet surprisingly light on its feet. It has ample tannin, freshness, and earth tones, all in perfect proportion for the bird and all its accoutrement. 2018 is Tim Malone’s vintage, and I think this little bottling of ours really captures his arrival. So much gratitude. 13.4%
