I always thought of Shmaltz brewing as a joke, a gimmick, a product line conjured up to sell based on a "shtick" rather than the quality of the product. That naive attitude lead me to miss out on 15 years of quality beer. Yup, that's right, Shmaltz brewing just turned 15 and along the way created some very creatively named beers. Messiah Nut Brown, Jewbelation, Mermaid Pilsner and Sword Swallower to name just a few. Like I mentioned, I didn't think much about Shmaltz until a good friend (who has a palate I trust) mentioned that he really liked Shmaltz's Hop Manna IPA. So we ordered it (knowing that my friend would buy a good chunk of that case) and I took a bottle home to try. I was still skeptical, but after pouring the beer and taking the first sip the skepticism quickly disappeared only to be replaced by the notion that we should never judge anything by it's "cover". The happy ending to the story is that we now carry many of Shmaltz's offerings and all of them are of a similar quality to the Hop Manna. I guess the other lesson learned would be "better late than never". -Mitch
