Mitch's Summer Vacation, Ah, Summer vacation. A time to rest, relax and escape the stresses of work. Or, in my case, seek out the joys of work in a new location. Ah, Summer vacation. A time to rest, relax and escape the stresses of work. Or, in my case, seek out the joys of work in a new location. That's right, I look for my job wherever I go, in this case, The Inn At Mount Washington, NH. Thanks to my extremely generous in-laws, my family, along with fourteen members of our extended family, got to enjoy the glorious mountains of New Hampshire for four days and nights. So how does work fit into this scenario you ask? Well, at dinner there is always wine on the table and with each resort we visit, comes a new wine list to explore and experience. The IMW's wine list was extensive, 20+ pages of wine from around the world, ranging from $30 per bottle to a staggering $700 (1st growth Bordeaux). As much as I love wine, it can be a daunting task to choose from such a large list and for such a varied crowd. To keep a long story (almost) short, when choosing wine for a large group I skip the whole "pairing" concept (everyone always orders different items from the menu, making it impossible) and shoot for a "crowd pleaser". The first night I filled the bill with Allegrini's approachable Palazzo Della Torre. Wonderful red berry fruit with an underlying soothing richness which pleased everyone's palettes. (NOTE: first night the wine arrived at the table "warm", trying not to be "that guy" I looked past it. The second night I rectified the problem by having the waiter put the red on ice for 5 minutes just to bring the temperature down a bit. Most reds are consumed to warm, they should be served between 62 and 68 degrees. Think slightly cooler than room temperature.) The second night I went a little more eclectic and choose Domaine Tempier's Bandol Rouge. Where the Allegrini was soft and friendly the Tempier had a rustic edge that was intriguing. Darker fruits led to a finish of mineral and spice. Everyone seemed to enjoy both night's selection. So ends my story, until our next vacation. (I'm skipping the details of the wines chosen for nights 3 and 4 simply because I am tired of typing and I am certain you are tired of reading) -Mitch
